The co-owners of Dumplings & Beer – Rose Ly–Schmidt, Wendy Tee, Michel Angelo and Alex Ly – felt that Stanley Street in Darlinghurst needed a new watering hole.

Dumplings & Beer opened in Potts Point in 2014, a hole-in-the-wall that squeezes in just 25 seats. “Our first one is smaller – it’s amazing filling up the place, having people squeeze in and be all together,” says Ly-Schmidt. “But we needed to expand for our second one.” The new venue seats 60.

The bar represents a modern teahouse. Old Chinese newspapers have been used to decoupage the furniture and you can watch old Chinese films projected on the walls. “The bar is inspired by old martial-arts movies, which show old temples and a retro setting,” says Ly-Schmidt. The concept was inspired by a Jackie Chan movie. “There was a scene where Jackie had stopped by an old tea house and had dumplings and rice wine.”

The menu is the same as the original venue’s – simple, tapas-style Chinese snacks. There are classic barbeque pork buns; scallop-and-chive dumplings and soupy xiao long bao. Order a bunch of spiced pork-belly sliders with cucumber, shallots and Hoisin sauce, or pan-fried tofu with slow-roasted eggplant, black fungus and coriander in a Peking duck-style wrap.

While Chinese tea can be found on the menu, the place is passionate about selecting beers that pair with the food. Find Australian, European and Asian brews such as Lord Nelson, Kwak, Duval and Sapporo.
