On a quiet street corner at the not-so-busy Redfern end of Bourke Street, lives a breezy little cafe.
St Jude, named after one of the 12 apostles (the patron saint of lost causes, not to be confused with the more notorious Judas), provides something simple, restful and hopeful in this converted corner store.
Owners Kate Thomas and Grant Piper have put their heads together to whip up a white walled, light timber, vintage knickknack-filled cafe retreat. Thomas brings her expertise from previous cafe ventures Ecabar (Darlinghurst) and DOV (Potts Point), giving St Jude the feeling of a much-loved local.
We’re told there was some competition for the spot, with bids coming in from a pizza joint and a deli, but we’re sure glad that this cafe popped up instead, serving a piping hot organic Peruvian brew from Rush Coffee in the central highlands and bursting toasted sandwiches of rare roast beef, sweet pickled onion and horseradish-buttermilk dressing.
The fit-out is the handiwork of Surry Hills designer Arthur Koutoulas and displays bespoke pieces, a retro nod here and there and plenty of simple, clean lines.
Locals prop up at the street-side seating, while friendly staff are attentive and happily make suggestions should you struggle to decide between the Welsh rarebit or the ‘Daily’ breakfast sanga. It might be named for St Jude, but there ain’t no lost causes here.
