In the world of casual eateries, there are many factors in ensuring one’s success. Low key as it may be, success never really rests solely on the food being delivered on one’s plate.
From their convenient location, minimalist interior, relaxed but knowledgeable staff and a menu bursting with hearty, inventive takes on classics, Surry Hills’ newest addition to the club, The Sandwich Shop, is one that seemingly has it all.
You’d think a lunch menu consisting of only a handful of sandwiches and salads might be a little light on for the hungry crowds, but one read is likely to change the mind of even the fussiest eater. The Original New York Reuben is a true homage to all things delicious and artery-clogging, while the tuna and white bean and the smoked salmon bagel offer up something a little bit lighter. All made with the freshest and finest of ingredients – as well as to order – there’s not much here that’s not to love.
If you can’t make it in at lunchtime, there’s a modest breakfast menu, but the real star of the show lies between two pieces of bread.
Possibly the most delightfully naff thing about The Sandwich Shop is its message to patrons as they enter and exit: “Life is like a sandwich. You have to fill it with the best ingredients.” It is an ethos that they clearly take to heart and are delivering it with gusto to all in Surry Hills.
