The store was originally a wholesale retailer specialising in truffles and caviar, which explains its indulgent tendencies (truffled potato chips, anyone?). These days it’s widened its horizons considerably and stocks a range of European products that are otherwise tough to find in Sydney.
Gourmet Life imports fresh European mushrooms, for example, which have to be cleaned by hand before they can pass border control. It also has a library of salts and peppers; jewel-coloured jams from Moreno Cedroni; fruit vinegars; century-old balsamic; and a perennial supply of fresh horseradish, wasabi and salsify. True to its roots, Gourmet Life also has the largest spread of caviar you’re likely to see in Sydney.
This tray is a good addition to any pantry, though the sparkling wine chips aren’t likely to last long in any household.
