Archie Rose Distillery has been delighting spirit drinkers since it opened in Rosebery earlier this year. The company has picked up a slew of awards and its spirits have found a home on the shelves of the city's best bars. Now Archie Rose is launching tailored spirits. These allow you to customise your gin, vodka or whisky, right down to having your name on the bottle.
“It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time – and which to the best of our knowledge has never been done before,” says Will Edwards, Archie Rose's owner. “We get to create these botanical distillates, play with flavours, search for unusual smoked malts and cask types every day, and we wanted to share that experience of creating a spirit with the public.”
Tailored spirits are created on Archie Rose's website. For customised gin and vodka, you choose up to five botanical distillates or opt for a suggested combination, such as “summer squeeze” – with blood lime, fresh orange and lemon myrtle. The next step is to set the strength of each ingredient, and then to customise the label with your name.
Things get a little more serious with the whisky customisation. And pricey: a whisky cask starts at four grand. First you choose between single malt or rye whisky, then the amount you want to make (20, 50 or 100 litres), and then the type of wood you want your whisky to age in (American oak, for example). You then decide whether you want your whisky smoked, and at what strength to cask it. The cask will then be stored at the bar until maturation (20 litres will take two-and-a-half years).
“The tailored whisky option is likely more appealing to the very serious whisky enthusiast, but the vodka and gin offerings are designed for anyone who has ever wanted to try their hand at making spirits,” says Edwards.
Archie Rose Tailored Spirits will be available from November 2.
