Thanks to Mr Black cold drip coffee liqueur, Surry Hills' Nixon Project will be transformed into Grind House, a three-night, pop-up coffee cocktail bar. The event hopes to combine two of this city's favourite pastimes – coffee and booze – into a fun package featuring live art performances, DJs and plenty of coffee cocktails.

Mr Black was founded by Sydneysiders Philip Moore and Tom Baker in 2012. Seeing no good coffee liqueurs on bottle-shop shelves, they decided to make their own. “In Australia we’re serious about our booze and specialty coffee, so the idea was to combine the two much-loved slices of contemporary culture,” says Baker.

Moore and Baker took to crowdfunding site Pozible, and after trying 300 different recipes, settled on the right mix. They began distilling small batches of their coffee liqueur in Erina on the Central Coast. Not long after, Mr Black was crowned the World’s Best Coffee Liqueur at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition.

Grind House will mark Mr Black's national launch and will feature bartenders such as Mischa Bonova of Rockpool Bar and Grill mixing adult ice coffees, Espresso Martinis, Mr Black Rye-Balls and boozy takes on the macchiato. Local Sydney artist Dale Bigeni, whose artwork adorns Mr Black bottles, will be doing a live art show, and DJ Mr Belvedere will also put in an appearance.
Grind House by Mr Black will be held over three nights from Thursday June 12 to Saturday June 14 at the Nixon Project, 35 Foster Street, Surry Hills. On Thursday night entry is $45 (which includes three Mr Black cocktails), with free entry Friday and Saturday nights.
