Swept up in the Mexican wave drenching the city (think El Loco and El Capo in Surry Hills to name a couple), Ground Zero Cafe in Manly has added nights to its opening hours, transforming into Cantinero for after-hours escapades.

Introduced by the team that gave us Miss Marley’s tequila bar just around the corner, Cantinero is a pop-up/take-over dinner spot, with the cafe taking on a Mexican cantina feel by night.

Tucked into a neat little pocket of cafes and shops, and spilling out into the back courtyard of the well-loved cafe for the balmy evening weather, it’s an idea that fits right in with the pop-up flavour of the moment.
The menu is fuelled by $5 tacos and botanas (snacks) turned out by executive chef Lupita Manzo Moreno (previously seen at Miss Marley’s) and painted with his authentic Mexican flavours and traditions.

Cocktails and Tequila Tromba complete the fiesta feel, so why not extend that beach trip into the evenings and head up to Cantinero for some unexpected Mexican by night. Watch out for litre jugs of La Bomba (Tromba Blanco, Grand Marnier, passionfruit and lime) to cool a hot breeze.

And we hear a rumour that they plan to take the Cantinero idea to Melbourne. Stay tuned.
