Sydney burger king Josh Arthurs has had an epic year. On top of sold-out, ticketed kitchen takeovers around Sydney, he opened three long-term residency pop-ups: twice at North Sydney’s Upper Deck and most recently at the Annandale Hotel.
“It took a lot of energy out of me moving around so much. It was a massive year,” says Arthurs. A permanent home has always been on the cards for Arthurs but he just needed to find the right location. “The Annandale Hotel worked best with our branding. We get on well with the venue and the locals like us.” That’s an understatement. The longest queue for Arthurs’ famous double-stacked burgers at the Annandale Hotel snaked down Parramatta Road and two blocks around the corner.
Arthurs is constantly innovating and shifting. He’s got a new menu called Pub Grub by Josh in the works. It’s a modern take on American surf and turf. There will be steak, mud crab and soft-shell crabs, all accompanied by Arthurs’ fine-tuned sauces.
Until the new menu comes out, Arthurs will continue to serve his signature burgers. The double-patty Primo Burger is on the menu, with Wagyu, crisp bacon, cheese, jalapeno peppers and onion rings, as well as the vegetarian “Lisa Simpson” and the Scorpio, southern fried-chicken burger.
Sides are a meal in themselves: popcorn chicken, Jurassic fries slathered in cheese and Primo sauce, and onion rings all make an appearance.
Then there’s the rotating list of boozy milkshakes. The Captain Cocoa is made with white rum, coconut syrup, vanilla ice-cream and coconut pieces. The Pick Me Up has Kahlua, chocolate syrup, an espresso shot and chocolate milk. Or for something less filling, there’s the Chipotle Bloody Mary.
