After selling out Sydney Uni’s Manning Bar last year, Hashtag Burgers has announced the second Burgerpalooza. This year the festival, now partnered with Menulog, will bring together some of Sydney’s best burger chefs at Marrickville’s Fraser Park.
“It's been such a crazy few weeks but it's finally come together, last minute as always,” says Hashtag Burgers co-founder Ben Kagan. He’s referring to the controversy that flared up when he and other co-owner, Archie Saliba, announced a month ago the festival would be held at Camperdown Park. More than 70 complaints were made to council by residents who were angry the festival would limit public access to the park. “I can understand, but we were only going to take 20 per cent of the park,” says Kagan. “People were worried about 10,000 people being there, but we were only going to have 1500 at any one time, the same as last year.”
“We have a much bigger space but we're making sure we keep lines and waits to a minimum,” says Kagan. Just like last year, ticket sales will be staggered, so only a certain number of people can enter at once.
They’re also bringing in more burgers. Chefs from BL Burgers, Burger Head, Down N’ Out, Mister Gee’s and Superior Burger are confirmed with more to be announced. Like last year, each chef will prepare an exclusive festival special, and some will also offer items from their regular menus. “All burgers will be $10, each will be smaller than a regular burger but bigger than a slider. So you can try more on the day.” Kagan says there’ll also be a mystery stall from The Halal Snack Pack Appreciation Society and desserts from Grumpy Donuts and N2 Gelato. “It’s not confirmed but I think Grumpy Donuts might be doing doughnut fries loaded with sauces,” says Kagan. “N2 will be launching a new range of milkshakes.”
Drinks will be provided by Coors, one of the festival’s sponsors, and music will be by Hashtag Burgers DJs. Burger Collective, an app to help you find and rate burgers, will be hosting competitions and games.
Burgerpalooza will be on April 1 & 2 from 12pm–9pm. Tickets are $15 and include a $10 Menulog voucher.
