Having said a reluctant goodbye to the old Yellow Bistro & Food Store, Potts Point welcomed its replacement Brass Bistro. Opening around eight weeks ago, this is the latest venture from reputable executive chef Darren Taylor (ex Kinselas, Bilson’s, Fine Bouche and Buon Riccordo).
Located in the Yellow House building, Brass’s sleek new interior is polished and modern. Inviting leather banquettes punctuate the space and dark timber floors and ceilings lined with mirrors give the space a pleasantly moody ambience. A smiling, smartly dressed waiter and the familiar smell of rich coffee and greet you simultaneously at the entrance. It’s a good mixture. A chilled, loungey soundtrack – compiled by renowned Sydney DJs Johnny Powell and Samantha Nethery – adds to the atmosphere.
Simple yet comprehensive, there are separate menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast, try eggs and tomatoes on brioche or a Croque Monsieur. For lunch, there are various salads and sandwiches (also available for takeaway) or generous mains of pasta, fish and steak. Everything, including condiments and gelatos, are made on the premises and there is a distinct lean towards organic, sustainable ingredients.
Of equal importance at Brass is the extensive wine list. Many are served by the glass and the staff are only too willing to point you in the right direction. The cocktail list contains both signatures and classics. For a refresher, try the ‘Slap My Pickle’, or for something with a jalapeno kick, go for the ‘51/50’.
Doing a great job of filling the well-loved shoes of the old Yellow, for a casual and relaxed dining experience, Brass is gold.
