Spanish tapas bar Foley Lane swung open its doors last Sunday morning, officially kicking off their new weekend brunch menu. But this is no ordinary brunch.

Taking their cues from New York City, where weekend brunches are a fiercely loyal institution, the Foley folks hope to ignite a similar brunch culture in Sydney. And with the eastern sun streaming in the windows every morning, coupled with outdoor seating, they’ve got the perfect space in which to do so. “We’ve got a big breakfast culture [in Sydney], but there aren’t many options out there for brunch, or brunch with booze,” Marchetto explains.[fold]

Apart from a full beer and wine menu, the morning cocktails are a play on the usuals. Owners Nathan Moses and Julian Marchetto have put a fresh spin on them, hoping to encourage people to have a drink without feeling too woozy. “They’re just fun morning things that are easy to drink,” says Marchetto. Light and refreshing, the Morning Martini is a glorious concoction of citrus vodka, apricot brandy and marmalade, garnished with a dried apricot. Enjoy fresh tomato juice in a Bloody Mary – either the ‘El Classico’ or a spicier Spanish version ‘de Espana!’ – or fresh plum in a Seasonal Fruit Margarita.

On the food front, Nelson Burgos (of Melbourne’s Mamasita) delivers on all fronts. Simplicity is the key here, allowing the impeccable quality of the produce to shine.

The menu is concise, offering a couple of ‘Hung Over’ options, three ‘Healthy’ choices and a handful of ‘In Between’ sides. The pork and potato hash topped with a poached egg (remember to crack the yolk) is a hearty dish, while rice pudding is light and not overly sweet.

But the winner is the roasted field mushroom with ricotta and an eschalot dressing – so good we even tried to pry the recipe from Burgos (to no avail, alas).

Open from 10am to 2.30pm on Saturdays and all the way through until the evening on Sundays, Foley Lane is the place to be if you’re looking for a bit of fun in the morning. And if booze before noon isn’t quite your thing, they’ve got Little Marionette coffee on board with them.
