After a raucous night out on the tiles, there’s nothing quite as good as a warm, cheesy, toasted jaffle to fill you up. The team behind The Eastern Hotel’s new bar, The Publican (situated on the ground floor) have cottoned on.
Former chef at The Bentley in Surry Hills, Matt Fitzgerald (also the chef at Chimmi’s), reckons that The Publican’s combination of jugs of beer and jaffles is a sure bet. “Jaffles are food that, if you’ve been drinking, go down very well. Being inebriated and toasted sandwiches almost go hand in hand,” he says, adding that there are 60 local craft beer and ciders with an alternating 12 on tap at The Publican.
The old faithful jaffle with baked beans is on the menu (of course), but they’re also turning out some fancy options like pork belly with spiced apple, plus some dessert jaffles including salted chocolate and walnut.
Beer and jaffles aside, the ambience and eclectic adornments at The Publican are enough to draw a crowd. The bar’s style is like a trip back to the 1930s, with a luxurious red velvet lounge, a vintage telephone booth, stacks of vintage suitcases and other odds and ends punctuating the space. Yet they also sport teal green walls and a faux fireplace with a collage of postcards pinned above. It’s a bit of a mishmash, but it works.
