Every year Restaurant Magazine, San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna release the list of 100 best restaurants in the world. Confidentially voted by over 800 professionals and leaders in the hospitality industry, including critics and chefs, it is considered one of the most influential lists in the world.

To be listed in the top 100 is considered a great honour. To be listed in the top 50 is a mark of huge respect. This year, four Australian restaurants made the list and it’s not the first time for any of them.

In the top 50, Sydney’s Quay in The Rocks came in at number 29. “We are thrilled and very proud to be on the list again this year,” says chef Peter Gilmore. “It’s an enormous privilege to be included in such extraordinary company, amongst the best restaurants in the world. We have an amazing team and are incredibly grateful to them, as it’s their hard work that got us there.”

In at 61, Marque in Surry Hills was up seven places from 2011. “It was totally unexpected,” says chef Mark Best. “To have moved up the list in the face of such talent was wonderful. I'm so very proud of the team at Marque and that we are able to continue to keep the dream alive, which was always to do the very best we could.”

Not far behind, at number 63, on the list was Melbourne’s Attica in Ripponlea, headed by chef Ben Shewry, while at number 76 was Sydney’s Tetsuya’s.

So Copenhagen’s Noma came in at number one and Girona’s El Celler de Can Roca at number two (both no change from last year), but four spots in the top 100? We’ve really got some dining to be proud of down under.
