Whether you’re interested in learning more about whisky or just curious about whisky-based cocktails, there’s plenty of events for whisky lovers at World Class Cocktail Week, on from May 7–13. Here’s six of the best.
Single Malts & Aussie Cheese at The Horse
Sample a range of single malt whiskies, paired with cheese from some of Australia’s greatest artisan cheese makers. Cheese from Second Mouse in New South Wales, Grandvewe in Tasmania and Alexandrina in South Australia, will all feature. Bartenders from The Horse will be on hand for a chat about the qualities and notes of each whisky. Each selection is $40 and available all week from 6pm.
Head to Cho Cho San as its menu transforms to reflect the modern Japanese Izakaya. Enjoy a Japanese-inspired Whisky Highball made from Johnnie Walker Blenders Batch Red Rye and nashi pear, to go with a signature pork katsu bun. The pairing will cost $19, and is available all week after noon during World Class Cocktail Week.
No bookings required.
Where There’s Smoke at Potts Point Hotel
Visit Potts Point Hotel any night during World Class Cocktail Week and try a flight of single malt whiskies to pair with a selection from its in-house meat smokers. The whisky range will include Dalwhinnie 15, Lagavulin 16 and Oban 14, paired with tender beef brisket, sticky spare rib and pulled pork, all smoked for eight hours and served on housemade jalapeno cornbread. The flight will be $35 and available from 5.30pm.
No bookings required.
Whisky & Wine at The Cellar by Bouche
Attend a one-off masterclass on the relationship of whisky and wine. Whisky ambassadors will chat about the use of wine barrels in whisky making and how the two types of alcohol can work together to create some of our favourite drinks. The bar will pair some of its favourite whiskies – including Talisker 10-year-old Scotch whisky – and wines, and discuss how each drink’s flavours can complement.
The masterclass will be $55, starting at 7pm on May 11. Book tickets online.
Desserts & Digestive Cocktails at The Cellar by Bouche
Stop by Bouche on Bridge’s bar The Cellar for a late-night dessert paired with a sweet cocktail by candlelight. Indulge in an Old Fashioned with maple glaze and apple; warmed spirits with French cacao folded-in to create a mousse-like texture; and mulled wine.
The pairing will be $40, starting at 9pm on May 13. Book tickets online.
Whisky & Gelato at The Wild Rover
Mix up the traditional whisky tasting by sampling a range of Scotch whiskies in the form of gelato. National Whisky Ambassador Simon McGoram is teaming up with Mr Goaty Gelato and taking over upstairs at The Wild Rover for a tasting of artisan gelato, paired and created with Scotch whisky.
The tasting will be $70, starting at 6.30pm on May 8. Book tickets online.
