A boisterous new eatery is opening later this month, melding German and American influences into a fun and rowdy sports bar complete with multiple large-screen televisions, 40 beers on tap, bright neon lights and classic sports memorabilia in a mammoth space.

Rockpool Dining Group’s (Rockpool Bar & Grill, Bar Patron, Fratelli Fresh, Spice Temple, Burger Project) latest casual concept is Winghaüs by Bavarian, a spin-off of its German restaurant and beer-house chain. It was launched in Brisbane last year, with the first Sydney outpost to open in Circular Quay in late January. The new venue is opening in the former site of the group’s Burger Project, which closed in December 2019.

As the name suggests, expect a lot of American-style chicken wings, fried till crisp and smothered in any of eight sauces: Teriyaki, Texas BBQ, Traditional, Korean, Habanero, Chipotle, Afterburner or Face Melting for a truly hot kick. Serving sizes range from 10 pieces to 100 in a single order.

Elsewhere on the menu is a spiced chicken burger with barbeque and hot sauce, the group’s Burger Project burger, plus a number of other items from the premium burg chain. There are also chips doused in hot sauce and ranch dressing, classic onion rings, potato gems and deep-fried pickles. For dessert, there’s New York-style cheesecake and deep-fried chocolate bars and ice-cream.

Limited-edition menu items for the opening revolve around Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey: fried wings with sticky sauce, a JD’s “Chookhaüs” chicken burger with the same boozy sauce, or a Jack & coke slushie straight from the machine.

Take a seat at a high-top table, in a leather booth, at a communal table or on a stool at the bar, where you can choose from 40 draught beers on tap. There are German brews – Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Franziskaner, Spaten and Hofbräu – alongside Budweiser, Stella Artois and Hoegaarden, plus local beers from 4 Pines and Pirate Life.

Cocktails on tap include Margaritas (which also come in frozen form), Old Fashioneds, Aperol Spritzes, Negronis and Espresso Martinis.

The large space has 20 television screens all wirelessly linked to stream simultaneously, so none of the action will be missed by the up to 145 punters who fit inside.

Winghaüs by Bavarian will open at Shop L106, Level 1, Gateway Centre, 1 Macquarie Place, Circular Quay in late January.
