“Let’s have some fun with it, make it a bit more loose.” That’s the brief Joel Amos (of Drnks) initially had for the wine fair idea. “I have a background in putting on parties, and it always amazed me these wine events were quite straighty-180,” he tells Broadsheet. “Very serious about the wine, lots of serious people standing around talking about the wine – and that’s never been the Drnks thing.”

The brief was nailed: Huge Moves is fun, it’s casual and it’s for anyone that likes a glass of wine.

“The irony is that the crowd is super passionate about wine, super interested in wine – but just a lot more casual about wine in general.”

Huge Moves 9 hits the Ace Hotel on Saturday October 19. Along with 40-plus producers and importers pouring, lobby eatery Loam’s putting together a spread of snacks – like grilled focaccia topped with anchovies – and there’s a stand dedicated to cheese. Plus, DJs from 4pm and $10 “lucky dip” glasses from the day.

And while you should stop at every stall, Amos tips the following five drops to be pretty special. Over to Joel.

I’ll Fly Away… lambrusco by Tim Ward Wines

“Tim makes this wine in a shed in Newcastle. He gets the fruit from Victoria. Lambrusco in Australia has a bad rap – thanks to drongo winemakers making sickly sweet styles of it through the ’70s and ’80s. It’s like any red grape though, and can make searingly dry fizzy wine – like this one. Drink it with some oysters, on a beach, in the sun, colder than cold.”

Riesling Sekt by Werkstatt Wine

“Another fizz! Our mate Bridget Mac from Werkstatt Wine is making some of the best juice in the country right now. Her Riesling Sekt is extremely well made and highly refined – almost champagne-esque. The fruit is from Mount Gambier in South Australia. Serious stuff.”

Radical Roza pink limoncello by Spirito Santo

“This new mob out of Adelaide is making some incredible spirits. The pink limoncello is way better than it sounds – lively spirits from a lively crew. It’s pretty wacky, but as a base for a drink or a soda, it’s great. It’s distilled and made in suburban Adelaide.”

Kindest Regards chardonnay by Meredith

“Meredith is at Huge Moves for the first time. Expect really interesting wines made with heart by our mate Mem Hemmings down near Gundagai. Her skin contact wine – a chardonnay – is a must-try.”

Gut Oggau wines from Lo Fi

“This isn’t just one wine, but our friends from cult importer Lo Fi are pouring a selection of the new Gut Oggau wines. This is insane. These wines are never on show like this – there’s nowhere else to try these wines like this. Get to this stand and try all of them asap.”
