Harry Lancaster couldn’t fight the appeal to combine food and yoga. “We just couldn’t resist bringing the two together,” says the director of BodyMindLife in Rozelle. The Egg Of The Universe wholefoods café now occupies the sun-dappled courtyard nestled alongside the building where classes are held. Fresh from their day’s practice, dewy-faced yoga-goers stream out the back door and into the open-air seating area, a peaceful space that belies its busy roadside setting.

“I’m a big believer in people eating what feels good for their body,” Lancaster says, noting the café’s menu offers the full spectrum of wholesome food. For guests in search of a cleansing meal, there’s the light organic chicken broth with seaweed and unpasteurised miso; the seasonal ‘perfect circle salad’ with cashew cheese and activated pesto is ideal for vegan diets; and the 12-hour slow-cooked, spiced biodynamic lamb stew will suit those after hearty comfort food.

“With yoga and the café, our aim is to meet people wherever they’re at and not preach what we believe is the correct nutritional path,” he explains. “At the same time, we want to ensure a high nutritional integrity in everything on the menu.”

The cafe’s list of suppliers shows consideration for local artisanal producers, sourcing sustainably-raised meat from Sydney’s Feather and Bone, sprouted grain bread from Purelife Bakery in northern New South Wales, cultured butter and crème fraiche from Pepe Saya, plus organic or chemical-free produce wherever possible.

For Lancaster, offering minimally processed, nutrient-rich meals was a natural extension of the yoga studios. “Most people [who start practising yoga] gradually start moving toward what they’re putting in their bodies,” he says. “The two go together so well.”
