Which Wines Pair Best With Your Fave Winona Ryder Eras?
The ’90s it girl is never out of style, and neither is natural wine. So alongside the Access Readers’ Preview at Winona 3.0, we asked the Sydney wine store team to pair some iconic Winona Ryder eras with equally iconic pours.

Elli Walsh and Luke Miller named the first Winona natural wine store as a nod to Johnny Depp’s famously botched “Wino Forever” tattoo and, more importantly, the eternally cool actress who inspired it: Winona Ryder.

It’s been six years since the first Manly bottle-o, and almost 12 months since Winona’s second iteration opened in Avalon. Now Winona 3.0 set to open in Rozelle, it seems only fitting that Walsh and Miller – along with general manager Ray De Souza – head back to their pop-culture roots and pair some top natural pours with their favourite Winona Ryder eras.

From teen angst to supernatural chaos, there’s a perfect accompaniment for it all, Walsh says. “Because some performances, and some bottles, are simply unforgettable.”

Here’s what she – together with Miller and De Souza – picked out.

Heathers (1989)

Das Juice 2024 maceration

“This crowd-pleaser hums with shiny red-apple, lychee and pineapple, textured tannins and a bright mineral acidity — as striking and memorable as the Heathers’ glossy high-school glamour. Like the cult classic that refuses to fade, Das Juice’s orange blend keeps pulling you back for one more sip.”

Reality Bites (1994)

Carussin NV Vino di Digby goon

“Blockbuster! Just like Reality Bites, this wine is unapologetically fun, a little messy, and endlessly relatable. Think vinous rom com. Sloshy red fruits, sunny acidity and playful effervescence mirror the film’s mix of ’90s angst, friendship and the quest for authenticity. A forever favourite in a generous format, perfect for sharing with your mates while debating life, love and mixtapes. Reality gulps.”

Beetlejuice (1988)

Joshua Cooper 2024 Balgownie Old Vines cabernet sauvignon

“Death row wine! Brooding, dramatic and a little bit spooky – Josh Cooper’s cabernet creeps with dark berries, violet perfume and structured tannins that keep you on your toes. Ride the waves of cassis and graphite through a wine as lively and unforgettable as the ghost with the most.”

Stranger Things (2016)

Benotti Rosavica 2024 “Nebiulina” Langhe nebbiolo

“Enter a vivid world of nostalgic thrills. Nebiulina is a Piedmont red that’s fresh, energetic and quietly complex, perfect for sipping at home or in the Underworld. Cherry, rose petals and white pepper are all bright-lit and beguiling, just as the Hawkins gang lights up Christmas-tree-style in the Upside Down. An impossible-to-put-down neb blending comfort and mystery. Chill down and chill out.”

Black Swan (2010)

Frederick Stevenson 2024 chardonnay

“Practice makes perfect! Like Black Swan, this chardonnay is all about precision, elegance and the tension between beauty and intensity. Swathes of white peach, citrus and subtle toast unfold with haunting finesse. A mesmerising chardy that balances grace and drama, proving that brilliance can be as intoxicating as it is unsettling.”
