Actress Anna Bamford is a Bondi resident but is currently spending her waking hours at the Sydney Theatre Company headquarters in Walsh Bay. Recognised for her role as Miranda Beaumont on the popular Network Ten series Wonderland, she’s about to take to the stage opposite Cate Blanchett, Richard Roxburgh and Eamon Farren, among others, in the world premiere of Chekhov’s The Present (in a contemporary adaptation by outgoing artistic director Andrew Upton).

Edition Coffee Roasters

When I want a really good breakfast, but really unique food – not a bacon-and-egg roll – I’ll go to Edition. The food is Scandinavian-Japanese. I love it. Last time I had candied pineapple on pancakes with butterscotch sauce, but there were sesame seeds on top – so it’s that Asian style but with sweet Scandinavian flavours. My boyfriend Joel had a Japanese-style soup, for breakfast! The food is really well priced but looks like a work of art, they take so much care so that when you eat it you really enjoy it, you don’t just wolf it down.

Artificer Specialty Coffee Bar & Roastery

This is my favourite place for coffee. They just do coffee, and it’s really, really good. Maybe I’m late to the movement, but it feels like it’s no longer just a long black, cappuccino or latte – [there’s now] cold drip and cold press and Artificer has all that. It’s a really simple place, which is why I like it. There are benches out the front so you can sit there and have your coffee in the morning. They have cold drip in little bottles to take away. They fit in your pocket and are really cute.

Kitchen By Mike

It’s obviously on a much bigger scale, but I love it because it’s like an old-style canteen, where you stand there and get your meat or salad. It’s the place I’d go to if I am with a big group of friends, it’s got a great vibe, it’s very buzzy, I love it. Out the back there’s a homewares store. Interior design is something I’m really passionate about, so I love the fusion of both good food and design. Collector Store on Crown Street is my favourite gift store and for stationary I love paper2.

The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf

I have lunch here every day at the moment. It’s a beautiful cafe with a beautiful view. The poached-trout salad with pearl couscous is my go-to.

With a show like The Present, which is around three hours long, it’s important to keep up [good habits]. The play is heartbreaking but it’s also very funny. I feel so lucky doing this at this point in my career, it’s something I never imagined would happen so quickly. It’s the first main-stage show I’ve done since graduating [Bamford graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2012]. Cate Blanchett, Jacqui McKenzie, Toby Schmitz and Richard [Roxburgh] have years of experience and immense knowledge on the technical aspects of theatre. It’s like being in a masterclass every day!

The Present is showing at The Rosyln Packer Theatre, Walsh Bay August 8– September 19.

The season is sold out but $20 Suncorp Twenties tickets are released for all STC shows each Tuesday from 9am.
