While Saturday May 20 is World Whisky Day, there’s a whole month to celebrate the superior spirit. This May, Sydney’s best bars and restaurants are turning their attention to single malts and whisky-led cocktails, showing the breadth of quality and creativity offered by the city’s drinks scene. Here are some of our favourites.
Double Deuce Lounge and Palazzo Salato
In the CBD, dive bar Double Deuce Lounge and trattoria Palazzo Salato are combining whisky and fashion for World Whisky Day. Stake a spot either of the bars to find Glenfiddich’s collaboration with Iordanes Spyridon Gogos fashion designer Jordan Gogos. The specially crafted cocktail will be served with a decorative garnish keepsake, inspired by the iconic Jordan Gogos’ trojan horse logo. The garnish is designed with a Glenfiddich-inspired pattern from ISG upcoming couture and ready-to-wear collection.
The Baxter Inn
Hidden from prying eyes in an alley off Clarence Street, the Baxter Inn is a semi-hidden whisky haven. There’s a staggering 800 whiskies on offer at this basement bar but the Whisky Apple (that’s whisky and apple juice) is its signature. For World Whisky Day, they’re tweaking the old favourite to play on the apple and orchard fruit flavours of the Glenfiddich 12-year-old single malt. Called the Green Apple Spritz, it features Glenfiddich 12, pear and ginger syrup, lemon, fresh apple juice and is topped with a touch of soda – resulting in notes of orchard fruit, vanilla and honey.
The Charles
Underneath its high ceilings and art deco details, The Charles has a reputation for the sweeter things, owing to its signature dessert trolley. The roaming cart is already well-stocked but things are getting a touch more indulgent for World Whisky Day, with three sweets made to pair with three equally rich Balvenie single malts. Chef Rhiann Mead will play the house-made treats against the citrusy sweetness of The Balvenie 12 Doublewood, 21 Portwood and 25 Rare Marriages.
The Doss House
The tangle of rooms and courtyards at the heritage-listed Doss House has long been an ideal spot to sip a whisky. While you’re welcome to dive into the 150-strong whisky list, The Doss House is highlighting a few special malts from the Balvenie for World Whisky Day. Take yourself off to a quiet nook under the low ceilings and savour a dram or go a little bolder with the bar’s Balvenie cocktails.
Banchō
A leading light in Chinatown’s nightlife, Banchō is a truly distinct spot to celebrate whisky. It’s a whisky-heavy cocktail bar that stocks a wide range of malts from around the world, with tasting flights to help new or curious whisky drinkers to expand their horizons. And the food menu is packed with fried and salty snacks – perfect to work up a thirst. For World Whisky Day, the team is celebrating Glenfiddich with plenty of straight serves and cocktails that should satisfy all levels of whisky experience.
