Brothers Jake and Luke Bonning opened the well-considered cafe, West End Espresso, in a small former hair salon in Jannali two months ago. “It’s something new for the area and initially we weren’t sure how it would be received,” Jake says. “We took on the space spontaneously a year ago. Luke was in Jannali and wondered why it was so hard to get coffee in such a populated area; we spoke to several people and were told that some commuters park at nearby Sutherland just so they can get a coffee for their morning train ride.”

As the ex-barista at Ham in Cronulla and White Horse Coffee, Jake knows coffee. “My eldest brother is a carpenter so he did a lot of the fit-out ,and the cakes and sweets are baked by my auntie – the same treats I ate myself as a kid." Everything about West End Espresso is close to home, the staff is made up of friends and family and the produce is sourced as locally as possible. The bread is from Cronulla’s Thoroughbred Bakery, tea by Ovvio Organics and the creamy coffee is from White Horse.

It’s simple food done well here. The menu is seasonal with several breakfast options and sourdough sandwiches for lunch. The Breaky Roll, with ham off the bone, soft-boiled egg, provolone and onion marmalade, is popular, though you’ll do well with a fresh, generous portion of anything off this concise menu.

The furniture was custom made for West End by bespoke woodworker Aaron Hitchcock, and the furnishings are mostly reclaimed. Every element here is thoughtful, from the weighty Robert Gordon coffee spoons, to the printed glassine slips that come neatly tucked in with the napkin on the plate. The result is a cosy, inviting space that reflects the family's love for the local community. The best seat in the house is affectionately known as the “nook”; the front corner spot for two where you can spend hours looking out at the energetic main stretch of Jannali in the morning sun.
