The team’s wrapping up the venue’s four-year tenure with a menu of favourites and $15 Negronis – and another Sydney hospo talent is moving in.

Last week, the news dropped that The Sunshine Inn crew was teaming up with a bunch of mates (and local hospo stars in their own right) to revamp Redfern’s Bat & Ball Hote l. The overhaul of the massive Cleveland Street boozer is already underway, and we’ll likely be enjoying cold ones there in early August. But with the good comes the bad: the Sunny team is calling it quits to focus on the new project.

“After a fun time with lots of awesome regulars, we’ve decided to close up shop,” co-owner Dynn Szmulewicz said in a statement. “It’s been a ride though. Operating through a pandemic, partnering with lots of cool producers and brands. I’ve enjoyed it immensely.”

Together with Dan McBride, Szmulewicz owns The Sunshine Inn, Enmore Country Club and Glebe bar The Little Guy. In September 2020, the pair took over the old Redfern Continental spot, dressing the walls in Australiana posters and dishing out a winning vegetarian menu and a tight, locally focused drinks list. Since then, The cheery spot's been a favoured hangout for snacky plates and an Aussie wine – or a $10 bowl of pasta on a Tuesday.

The Sunshine Inn’s last day of trade will be Saturday June 29. Until then, find a menu starring chef Lizzie Tillett’s favourites from over the years (the zingy orecchiette with preserved lemon and tommies, perhaps? Or the strawberry bruschetta?). Special wines from the cellar will be on pour, too. And for the last month? $15 Negronis (an excellent way to sip through a wintry night).

“We want to go out with a bang,” venue manager Rachael Paul says. “We’ll be hosting a big dinner party [on June 6] to celebrate with the Redfern community. We’re excited to serve up some Sunny classics, pour some really special wines and celebrate the last four years.” Bookings are yet to be released for the celebration, but keep your eyes on The Sunshine Inn’s socials.

The space has been sold to another frontrunner in the Sydney hospitality scene, with more details to come.

The Sunshine Inn will close on Saturday June 29.
