Darlinghurst hip-hop and cheese bar Big Poppa’s is kicking aside the back-to-work blues and relaunching its cheese club this Sunday. The Oxford Street eatery first began its cheese club in 2018, and after a hiatus last year it’ll be matching fromage and wine at an event held one weekend every three months.
The debut event for 2020 will pair champagne with French cheese. Fromage lovers will be guided through a tasting of three French-inspired cheese dishes created by executive chef Liam Driscoll. Each dish will be paired with a different type of Ruinart champagne – a blanc de blanc, a rosé and a non-vintage.
Guests will be led through the cheese and wine by Dean O’Riley, Ruinart’s national ambassador, and Minna Hanson, Big Poppa’s restaurant manager. Each cheese club night will feature different wine and cheese regions, and club members will get special rewards at Big Poppa’s.
The rehashing of the cheese and wine club is fitting – Big Poppa’s was launched by owner Jared Merlino and his former co-owner Lewis Jaffrey (now Archie Rose’s group bars manager) partly as a way to access cheap cheese. Every time the two hung out, they’d end up sitting around snacking on cheese and drinking wine while listening to hip-hop. So, Big Poppa’s – a wine, cheese and hip-hop diner – was born.
