Uber, in collaboration with more than 100 local restaurants, brings UberEATS to Sydney. A natural progression from its onslaught of publicity-churning deliveries, which included puppies, kittens and real-life emojis, Uber is now delivering food.
Launching today, Sydney is the second place in Australia where UberEATS has been rolled out. (The launch in Melbourne happened earlier this year). Julian Cincotta of Butter, one of the restaurants on board, believes our diverse, innovative food culture is why Australia is the only country in the Southern Hemisphere where UberEats is available. “Australia’s food industry is really cutting edge, it’s really at the top,” he says.
Available to Sydney’s inner suburbs, UberEATS will deliver every day from 11am to 10pm. Restaurants such as Saké and Three Blue Ducks will be involved, as will family favourites such as Fratelli Fresh. Butter, and Thievery are also on board.
“UberEATS is trying to get high-end dining places, that do good food, on board with them,” says Cincotta. “Butter aims to be innovative, so it made sense partnering with the most innovative technology company in the world to deliver our food.”
Butter has developed some dishes especially for delivery, such as a sweet cheese toastie glazed in orange blossom; and a Wagyu-brisket kebab with spiced pumpkin, pickles and smoked aioli. “It gives us a chance to test a few things.”
UberEATS joins an already competitive market for premium online food delivery. UberEATS will join other companies such as Deliveroo and Foodora as well as local operators such as Menulog.
General manager of UberEATS Australia, Simon Rossi, says Uber’s existing reputation as a user-friendly service will set UberEATS apart from its competitors. “As people have come to expect from our Uber services, it will be seamless, just the touch of a button,” says Rossi.
“It’s a one-app thing,” Cincotta adds. “In this day and age a lot of people are busy and to be able to get your food and taxi service in the one place is convenient. It’s a good market for it.”
