The milk- and yoghurt-based creations span banoffee, raspberry cheesecake, Snickers and a handful of alcoholic options.

What was once a rusted-on Darlinghurst Road tobacconist is now a gelato spot, thanks to 20-year-old student Lisa Yuan. She’s in the middle of a commerce degree but somehow found the time to open Two Spoons in July, with help from her mum.

“We did the fit-out ourselves,” Yuan says. “We were on our knees ripping out four layers of flooring just to get to the original marble, which you now see at the front of the store. And the walls, we hand-trowelled everything ourselves.”

Yuan moved from New Zealand to Sydney for uni and found herself taken with local gelato shops. She got into experimenting with different flavours, but also wanted to bring a late-night hangout to Potts Point that wasn’t centred around alcohol.

“I live locally,” Yuan says. “And whenever me and my friends [went] out, there was always the question of ‘Where do we go next?’ It felt like the only options were cafes that closed by 3pm, or it was bars. But it’s not every day of the week that you want to go drinking.”

The crisp white interior is reminiscent of the buildings in Santorini or Ios. Keeping to the vision, the shop serves coffee and affogato, as well as milk- and yoghurt-based gelato, until late: 11pm on weeknights and 12.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The gelato is thick and stretchy but not too sweet, allowing the natural flavours to shine. The banoffee was the popular favourite in the first month. The Snickers, made with roasted peanuts and house-made peanut butter, has also been a hit.

There are also a few boozy options – bacio and rum, Baileys, and a dairy-free Aperol Spritz number. The rum cuts through the richness of the chocolate bacio, adding depth to what’s otherwise an immensely rich mouthful.

“I just thought it was something fun,” Yuan says. “Like, why not? I can turn anything into gelato. Alcohol is a harder one to do, because alcohol lowers the freezing point of any product, so I had a play around with that.”

For something a little fresher, there’s a dairy-free lime and basil option, while Yuan’s personal favourite is the raspberry cheesecake. It has a yoghurt base, reminiscent of the viral two-ingredient cheesecake that overwhelmed algorithms at the beginning of the year.

“I wanted to dedicate a whole section of the menu to yoghurt-based gelato, because I think it’s so underrepresented,” Yuan says.

Next time you’re after a low-key, late-night hangout in the area – maybe an Aperol gelato nightcap –find Yuan serving scoops at Two Spoons, between preparing for her exams.
