Twenty new venues have been announced for Sydney Place, the new precinct bringing together Sydney’s tallest office tower (which has just topped out), retail and dining spaces, and a public plaza on the edge of Circular Quay. The restaurants, bars, cafes and shops will spread across a network of laneways below the 55-storey tower. They join the reimagined, Maurice Terzini-led Jacksons on George, which has already been announced for the precinct. And the Icebergs restaurateur isn’t the only recognisable hospitality name who’s been lured to the hub.

Surry Hills favourite Lode Pies, by Federico Zanellato (Lumi Dining, Ele, Restaurant Leo), will take up residency in Rugby Place, a laneway right off Pitt Street. Morgan McGlone (Bar Copains, ex-Belles Hot Chicken) will open an iteration of his Potts Point chicken eatery, Sunday, while a petite Japanese-inspired whisky bar and diner by Besuto’s Joel Best will be located down a “hidden alleyway”.

A noodle bar by beloved laksa joint Malay Chinese Takeaway will also be part of the hub – welcome news for those saddened by the forced closure of its Hunter Street digs after 22 years, due to the Sydney Metro project. And popular Rockdale sandwich shop Kosta’s is also headed into the precinct.

Each laneway in the new hub is designed to serve a different purpose. Crane Lane is for everyday dining; visit for Bobo Dumplings, Toastiesmith, Open Sesame (a Middle-Eastern eatery), Burger Point, Sushi Yuzen, Dopa, C9 Gelato and Yasaka Ramen.

Over at Rugby Place, it’s all about easygoing takeaway – that’s where you’ll find Sunday, Lode Pies, Malay Chinese Noodle Bar and Kosta’s.

And down Underwood Street there’ll be a series of small and intimate spots, including Best’s venue, Kingswood Coffee, The Associate cafe and Thirteen Feet Tattoo.

The sizeable range of venues will join Jacksons on George – a more sophisticated version of its predecessor, offering a ground-floor pub, a middle-level restaurant and wine bar, and a cocktail bar on the rooftop.

Sydney Place joins a clutch of new drinking and dining hubs that have opened in the CBD over the past few years, including Quay Quarter Lanes, 25 Martin Place, Barrack Place and Darling Square.

Venues at Sydney Place will start rolling out in March 2023.
