You know it as Bronte Road, but until the late 1800s it was called Nelson Road, after Lord Nelson, the Duke of Bronte. So it’s fitting that the strip’s newest eatery takes Nelson as its name, considering its affection for the past.
Opening just after Australia Day, the charming Nelson Road Tuck Shop is all slick white tiles with a brightly lit countertop. Co-owners Felix and Corinna Clark – a husband-and-wife team who also own Waverley’s Bellagio Cafe – have imbued their menu with natural and simple ingredients and flavour combinations.
The menu lists retro tuck shop favourites such as meat pies, sausage rolls and even an ANZAC spelt granola. “We’re trying to take our customers back to the times when they were licking the bowl after making a cake, or squabbling over the off-cuts of the Sunday roast,” says Felix.
Though there are some items that seem nostalgically indulgent Felix insists that “life is about balance.” The cafe’s fridge is stocked with huge jars of fresh juice and smoothies that rotate daily, including green options, and a bright orange smoothie in a jar containing turmeric, peach, orange blossom, coconut cream and Greek yogurt.
With a refreshing approach to food and its convenient location in the heart of Bondi Junction, the Nelson Road Tuck Shop is sure to become a favourite for those looking for a nourishing trip down memory lane.
