Restaurant Hubert, CBD
While you’ll never be able to transfer the energy and excitement of Sydney’s most fabulous dining room to your home, there’s still something very fabulous about eating its signature dishes in your lounge room. In particular the sizzling twice-baked gruyere soufflé. Ooft, what a dish – a dish that also comes with a sense of fulfilment because it requires you to do a little bit of cooking (i.e covering it with cream and cheese and putting it in the oven to heat). It’s that level of accomplishment we need right now. You can order banquets, single dishes, a selection of cheese, the famous Hubert burger – and there’s even a caviar service complete with buckwheat blini and condiments ($190). Because it’s ordered through Providoor, everything requires some level of assembly and cooking, but it’s worth it because this was as close to eating at a fancy restaurant that we’ve experienced during this lockdown.
Delivery is available Thursday through Sunday and click-and-collect 4pm–6pm, Wednesday to Saturday from 15 Bligh Street, Sydney. Book here.
Sunday, Potts Point
Every day survived in lockdown is a milestone worth celebrating with comfort food. For us that’s rotisserie chicken, garlic bread and a tub of mashed potato with salty gravy on the side. Morgan McGlone’s French rotisserie-chicken restaurant and takeaway joint is taking orders to go every day of the week. Right now, Sunday has a DIY ramen pack – a collaboration with Chaco Bar for $39 (two serves). Or, for $70, you can order a chicken pack of half chicken; garlic bread; your choice of roasted potato, mash or fries; a side of sweet greens; gravy and either a bottle of red, rosé or prosecco. There’s also Basque cheesecake with dulce de leche for $12, which will help get us through another day at home.

Mr Niland at Home, Paddington
Kingfish pho. Murray cod tacos. Rock lobster spanakopita. Swordfish schnitzel. No one could accuse seafood wizard Josh Niland of a lack of creativity this lockdown. His takeaway service, Mr Niland, is available from Wednesday to Sunday each week – with one main dish plus sides on offer per day. Coming up this week are king prawn and tarragon mayo rolls on soft milk buns ($60); corn tortillas filled with Murray cod, chilli, cabbage, avocado and lime and jalapeño hot sauce ($65); and rock lobster gumbo (soup) that comes with smoked Murray cod fat rice, organic greens and corn bread ($125). The downside is, it’s available for pick-up only from Saint Peter, which is sad news if it’s outside your five-kilometre radius right now.
Order in advance. Pick up from Saint Peter between 2pm–7pm. 362 Oxford Street, Paddington.

Ormeggio at the Spit, Mosman
During lockdown this Mosman classic has partnered with its sister restaurant Chiosco for home comforts turned up a notch. New dishes are regularly added, but the menu stalwarts are its dinner boxes for two. At the moment, the meaty version includes ciabatta with house-made ricotta, lasagne, beef cheeks braised in red wine, tiramisu and more, while the vegetarian version replaces the meaty items with a filling soup and veggo lasagne. At the moment, Ormeggio is also doing its bit to support truffle farmers; as almost the entire truffle season has been during Sydney’s lockdown, those farmers haven’t been able to get their black gold out to restaurants as they usually might. Enter Ormeggio. At $360, its truffle box isn’t a steal – but it does have truffle on everything. There’s risotto with truffle, an entire duck with truffle, potato puree with truffle, gelato with truffle and more. It’s only available August 19 to 21; order 24 hours in advance. There’s also a range of à la carte dishes, as well as candles to really amp up the vibe.
Order online for pick up at D’Albora Marinas, Spit Road, Mosman between 2pm–5pm Thursday to Saturday, or delivery Thursday to Saturday, to the north shore and northern beaches.
Pizza Madre, Marrickville
Sometimes all you need is a slice of good pizza and a glass of good wine. And Pizza Madre delivers both – literally. The veggo Marrickville pizza joint is doing pick-up and delivery of its beautifully blistered pies (we’d go the roasted brussels sprout and fermented-chilli pizza topped with confit garlic, parmesan and fior di latte for our money). The rocket and pear salad is an ideal accompaniment, while the not-too-sweet tiramisu is the cherry on top. So far, so good – but it’s also doing half-price on a range of natural wines, including a Konpira Maru MK rosé that’s so easy-drinking it won’t last the night.
Order via Bopple Tuesday to Sunday 4.30pm–9pm, for pick up at 2/205 Victoria Road, Marrickville or delivery.
