Sunday will be the climax of the Aroma Festival, showcasing many of the people and businesses at the forefront of the coffee industry in Australia. It promises to be a day of coffee exploration and enlightenment, with the opportunity to sample some of the best coffee suppliers in Sydney, new and experimental coffee products, live music and the opportunity to watch baristas compete against each other.
More than 50 companies will have stalls spread out around The Rocks, from Cadman’s Cottage all the way up to George Street North. Coffee businesses will be showing off their produce, eager to talk coffee, provide coffee-machine demonstrations, cuppings and serve you a cup of their finest. Caffeinate yourself with everything from a good old latte, an exotic single origin, coffee-infused beer or a gluten-free coconut, ginger and coffee concoction. Supplement this with a multitude of treats including baklava, single-origin chocolate and gingerbread.
Latte Art Smackdown and Demonstrations
Receiving a coffee with a perfectly crafted rosetta or swan can often be the part you remember long after. On Sunday, Breville will host a latte-art competition. During the fast-paced event competitors will spin a wheel to decide which shape they must make. Each round will be judged by Australia’s coffee world elite - Caleb Cha, the 2015 World Latte Art Champion and Franki Shi, two times NSW Latte Art Champion. World Barista Champions Sasa Sestic and Habib Maarbani will give latte art demonstrations in a more relaxed atmosphere and Sestic will speak about his journey to becoming world champion. If you leave feeling inspired, head over to the Breville stand (at the Cleland Bond Building, The Rocks) and find out how steady your pouring wrist is.

No, this isn’t latte art as you know it – this is artistic appreciation of coffee taken to the next level. Experimental artist James Patrick uses edible media; he paints using food. In the past he’s found success with tomato sauce and wine, and lately has been experimenting with coffee. He’s been hard at work on his current piece, which will be completed and unveiled on Sunday.
