Paper umbrellas, leis and vintage pin-up posters from the ’50s. Welcome to Sydney’s new tiki bar, Lost Lau, slated to open in the CBD in December.

After hosting a string of successful rum parties and festivals last year, Sydney Rum Club founder Tom Bulmer has partnered with Bryce McDonough and Chau Tran – the guys behind Burrow Bar. Together they set out to create a “lost paradise in the heart of the concrete jungle.”

Lost Luau (“Luau” being a Hawaiian word for a family gathering or celebration) will be taking over the York Trading site on York Street over summer. “We want a sort of rustic, broken down feeling … a beach touch,” says Bulmer.

You’ll find all the classic cocktails including Piña Coladas, Mai Tais and Daiquiris. “We’re here to make tiki drinks the right way,” says McDonough.

“Friendly, rustic island bites” will be taken care of by the Island Boys from Marrickville’s Factory Theatre. After training in several London Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as a stint as sous chef for Luke Mangan’s Chicken Confidential, Phil Spence will lead the team in the kitchen.

Lost Luau opens on Friday December 1 and will trade throughout summer.
