In a recent episode of Real Time with Bill Maher he discussed the immigration issue America faces: the infiltration of Australians. Apparently there are too many Hemsworths in the USA and, “You can’t swing a dead wallaby without hitting an Australian.”
However, the same goes in Australia. It’s not exactly that we’ve been inundated with Americans specifically, but we sure do have a lot of American-style eateries. Chefs are trying to perfect their brisket, burger and waffles-and fried-chicken recipes. Not that we’re complaining, it’s a pretty great cuisine. Here are a few of our favourite places to eat American food.
In the heart of Surry Hills is Surly’s, an American-style pub. Think of every movie with a typical American bar and this is it – the walls are lined with Coors posters, American advertising and Americana knick-knacks. It has a selection of barbequed meats, such as ribs, pulled-pork sandwiches, burgers and fried chicken complemented by American faithfuls such as Pabst Blue Ribbon and Coors.
If you want a good ‘Merican burger and you live east, Cheekyburger does it, without the full decor of an American-style diner. Try its signature burger: the Cheeky Cheeseburger a classic American beef burger with pickles and cheese.
Brooklyn Hide is Surry Hills’ answer to New York bagels. Created and owned by Matthew Forsdike, who used to be a chef in The Big Apple, it sells bagels named after the boroughs in NYC, such as The Bronx – prosciutto, egg, tomato chutney and rocket.
This isn’t your typical, Budweiser-on-tap-with-Blake-Shelton-blasting-from-the-speakers kind of joint. Think cool, modern Soho with a Southern inspiration. Located in Newtown and owned by American chef Gregory Llewellyn, you can see the NYC inspiration in the menu; it’s all about modern-day comfort food.
Brooklyn Boy Bagels
If you want to try a real, authentic bagel without flying halfway across the world, Brooklyn Boy Bagels is the real deal. It is all about serving authentic New-York-style bagels and babkas to the people of Sydney. The bakery is headed up by Brookyln-born Michael Shafran.
Paradise Road Diner
Paradise Road Diner is a quintessential diner with a minimalist touch. The North Bondi joint has recently opened and its menu includes sloppy burgers, waffle slabs with fried chicken and Texas chilli.
Glazed Hand Crafted Donuts
Craving a good doughnut? Two girls from California create handmade doughnuts to remind them of home. Everything is made from scratch from the bread itself to the icing. You can order the doughnuts from the website or find them at Bondi Markets.
Annandale couple Scott Clark and Elise Honeybrook work from home to create these American-style doughnuts. They deliver nine or more doughnuts to anywhere between Dulwich Hill and Paddington, but only on Fridays, due to their tiny workspace.
