Sydney creative agency Buffet has published a list of 12 iconic Sydney dishes as the 12 star signs of the zodiac, in what it’s calling Snackstrology.
Released on Instagram – and conceived by Buffet’s graphic designer, Nathalie Rolando – the meme cheekily assigns the king of sandwiches, the pressed New Orleans muffuletta from Chippendale’s A1 Canteen, to the hard-working horned goat of Capricorn. Representing the fiery ram of Aries is the woodfired rum baba dessert that is set alight tableside at Surry Hills’ Firedoor. And the irresistible cheeseburger spring rolls from Potts Point’s Ms G’s stand in for the spirited and vivacious Leo.
Asked how accurate the concept is, Sophie McComas, the director and co-founder of the Surry Hills-based agency (and a past Broadsheet Sydney editor) says, “Oh, extremely,” her tongue planted firmly in cheek. “Everyone knows astrology readings are 100 per cent accurate and must be taken as gospel at all times.”

Cancer, for example – a deeply complex sign sometimes hidden under a soft exterior – was paired with contemporary Japanese restaurant Cho Cho San’s steamed pork katsu bun because, says McComas, it’s quite finicky to make.
The flaky, buttery croissant from Woolloomooloo’s artisan bakery Flour and Stone represents Virgos (known to be efficient and complex perfectionists), while the black and white Neenish Tart introduced to the Opera House fine diner Bennelong by chef Peter Gilmour in January this year represents the twin sides of Geminis.
The amazingly melty saganaki cheese with honey and oregano from Potts Point’s modern Greek restaurant The Apollo – a dish beloved by Broadsheet readers – is assigned to Sagittarius, which is represented by the centaur, the mythical creature of Greek mythology. superb bread and butter pickles is a natural fit for Libra, which is epitomised by a strong sense of fairness.
