2023 has flown by, and now it's time for the best part of the Christmas season – all the festive treats that Sydney's cafes, bakeries, and distilleries have to offer. What better way to infuse our lives with that silly-season spirit than via piles of lamingtons, lovingly made panettones and luxe gift hampers packed with festive goodies perfecting for sharing (or scoffing solo).

Tokyo Lamington’s Christmas lamingtons

A former Black Star Pastry chef and the founder of N2 Gelato are putting a festive spin on the humble sponge cake with a range of nostalgic Christmas flavours. There’s a Christmas pudding lamington covered in spiced cookie crumbs, as well as a gluten-free gingerbread lamington filled with gingerbread cookies and cream. Plus, a candy cane lamington filled with peppermint chocolate mousse and yuzu fruit mince pies.

Pioik Bakery’s panettone
Panettone may not be everyone’s favourite dessert – but Pyrmont’s Pioik Bakery is hopeful its version, made using a 36-hour recipe, will change people’s minds. Every weekend until Christmas the bakery is turning out freshly baked moist and buttery batches of the traditional Christmas sweet bread, filled with plump raisins and candied orange, and topped with a sweet crust of almonds, cocoa husk and pearl sugar.

Baked by Keiran’s hampers
Often Christmas shopping can be overwhelming, but edible gifts are always a winner, especially when they’re Baked by Keiran. Each hamper ($75) comes packed neatly in a box and includes the bakery’s soft and chewy gingerbread folk; crumbly fruit-mince pies; a boozy Christmas pudding; white chocolate truffles; a bag of Christmas granola; and white chocolate brownies with strawberry and pistachio. A black forest bombe Alaska is also available and will make for a fun table centrepiece.

Sonoma Bakery's panettone
Each year, Sydney seaside fine diner Icebergs collaborates with Sonoma Bakery to create its panettone. This year’s recipe is a combination of milk chocolate, brandied cherries and almonds. Past flavours have included green ants and Davidson plum. Sonoma is also selling a “cronettone” – yep, that’s a mini panettone made from croissant dough. The flaky dough is swirled with classic flavours of candied fruits and dark chocolate throughout.
Panettones are available from December 7 to 24. Pre-order online for pick-up.
