Ahh, the Sunday session. The timeless ritual that represents the last chance for a quiet tipple before the drudgery of the work week. But the Sunday session isn't always smooth sailing. Because no matter how good a time you're having, there's always that thought gnawing away in the back of your head: that tomorrow the fun is all over.
But not this weekend. Thanks to Labour Day, this weekend you can have a carefree Sunday session. All safe in the knowledge that Monday can be given over to whatever the hell you want to give it over to.
So happy carefree Sunday. And here's a list of the best bars for a Sunday session this long weekend. Oh, and weather gods – it'd be great if we could have one of those 26-degree sunny spring days. Thanks.
Anchor Bar – Bondi
For swashbuckling good times and gentle sea breezes, it's hard to go past Anchor Bar. Pull up a seat by the window and work your way through their impressive tequila list.
Sugar Lounge – Manly
Can't afford a jaunt to the South Pacific? Then head to Manly and hole up in Sugar Lounge. It's three levels of tiki-themed fun complete with ocean views and plenty of fruity cocktails.
Opera Bar – Circular Quay
If you've got tourists in tow this weekend, then you'll probably want to show them the sights. If you're feeling lazy, just take them to Opera Bar and let them figure it out themselves. The views are sublime and the drinks sweet and cold.
Jester Seeds – Newtown
Newtown's quiet achiever continues to impress. Order a sangria and then corral a spot out on the astroturf in the sunny courtyard. Alternatively, snare a seat up front overlooking King Street – the view is rarely dull.
Arcadia Liquors – Redfern
From the stylish interiors to the friendly staff to the lovely courtyard complete with wall garden, Arcadia Liquors has everything in place for a rip-roaring Sunday session. Nurse a Young Henry's beer or sip classics like Manhattans, Old Fashioneds or Sidecars.
The Local Taphouse – Darlinghurst
If you feel like Sunday should be all about beer, then head to The Local Taphouse. There are twenty craft beers on tap from all over the globe and plenty more by the bottle. Add in some hearty pub grub and a sunny deck on the roof and you'll wish every day was Sunday.
Ching-a-Lings – Darlinghurst
Finding Ching-a-Lings will be your first achievement. The second will be snaring a perch on the sunny deck. It'll be worth it though. Especially with a frosty Coopers in hand.
The Little Guy – Glebe
An ideal spot for a relaxed Sunday drink, The Little Guy has a stellar list of beers and a rotating roster of interesting cocktails. Pull up a stool at the bar and munch on some popcorn – you'll forget you even have a job.
