The ex-directors of Crust Pizza have teamed up with Pony Dining to launch Zeus in Drummoyne. This restaurant takes the experience of Greek street food, “and turns it up a few notches,” says Peter Augoustis. He is one of the seven partners at Zeus who are, “all Greek and all related.”
The food is simple Greek fare at its best; fresh and filled with flavour. “We do everything from scratch,” says Augoustis. “We’ve had mums, grandmas, aunts and in-laws in here critiquing us. It’s been a great journey.”
The team has had a bit of fun with the menu. The names of the gyros (The Greek equivalent of a kebab, found all through the country) range from Papou Niko (“all of us have a grandpa named Nick”) which is salty char-grilled pork wrapped in pita with Aegean slaw, caramelised onion, preserved lemon mayo and parsley, to the Uncle Tzimmy Classic; char-grilled lamb, pork or chicken with tomato, tzatziki, onion, paprika and hot chips wrapped in warm pita bread.
“The meat is cooked in a very boutique manner, slow cooked for more than 12 hours. We cook on lava rocks, on an automatic conveyer system, so we know every thing is going to be the same quality by the time it gets to the gyros,” says Augoustis.
The design company DS17, who also designed Greek CBD restaurant Alpha, is responsible for the sleek, white-tiled walls, bronze fittings and wooden shelves. Imported Greek honey and olive oil complete the interior. But the eye is immediately drawn to the black lettering on the far wall that details the inspiration behind the restaurant’s namesake.
As the Greek legend goes, Gods Zeus and Hermes visited a small village in disguise as poor travellers, and began asking for a place to spend the night. They were unceremoniously turned away by everyone except a poor elderly couple – Baucis and Philemon. The team at Zeus believes the most important thing a person can do is demonstrate filoxenia, that is, showing hospitality, generosity and friendship to any guest in your home, God or mortal. At Zeus, the philosophy is simple, the fare is fresh and you’ll feel right at home.
