Hunters Hill has received a shot of renewed energy in recent months thanks to the redevelopment of the junction area on Gladesville and Ryde Roads. There’s Napoli Pizzeria which has already opened its second Neapolitan pizzeria (and there’s more to come), and coffee aficionados, Dachshund a couple of doors along.

Now there is also Stone Ground Bakery, which opened its doors in September. In a tiny shopfront on Gladesville Road a local husband-and-wife team, made up of Melina and Angelo Frelingos, is turning out freshly baked pastries, quiches, sausage rolls and pies from the in-house bakery. All the kitchen activity can be seen through huge glass panels that take you inside the action. Behind the counter there’s also a sizeable display of fresh bread that comes daily from the Gregory’s Bread bakery at the Sydney Fish Market, which is also owned and run by the Frelingos and has been in the family for 25 years.

“We bake our bread there [Pyrmont] and bring it here, and we bake our pies and pastries here and take them down there,” says Melina Frelingos, adding that they are also hoping to upgrade the Fish Market bakery. The cafe space is fresh and compact and the coffee no afterthought, with Will & Co. coffee featuring as the house brew. It’s a little bakery that’s getting a big welcome and so far it has been selling out, so get in early if you want your pick of the pastries.
