What we covered this week
• First look: It’s a sunny afternoon and people are strolling down the street, waving to the local butcher. This isn’t Pontypandy, it’s Paddington – and they’re greeting the team at family-run butcher Field to Fork.
• “Fucking crabs everywhere”: the time 19 mud crabs escaped at Spice Temple, as told by executive chef Andy Evans.
• I can’t stop thinking about: the buttery, beautiful clay pot rice at a cool Korean diner. The dish sees every grain of rice evenly coated in truffle butter with a hunk of Glacier 51 toothfish on top. “Leaving behind even a single morsel would be unthinkable,” says Broadsheet writer Pilar Mitchell.
• A Sydneysider has been named Australia’s best bartender at the Diageo World Class Bartender Awards. You won’t believe how quickly he made three Espresso Martinis.
• All the new restaurant, bar and cafe openings we got excited about in May.
• Five to try: seriously good gluten-free baked goods in Sydney. These loaves, doughnuts, tarts and cakes stand up to our city’s best gluten-stacked options.
• The best thing I’ve eaten lately: the Broadsheet Sydney team’s favourite bites of autumn.
You might’ve missed
• Korean department store Kmall 09 brings 2000 square metres of Seoul to western Sydney. The two-storey complex is tipped to be the largest Asian supermarket Down Under, and packs in a fleet of Korean eateries – including the first Aussie location for a popular Korean chain.
• First look: Chuck & Sons is the brewery and taproom from the “godfather of craft beer”. Hahn, James Squire, Kosciuszko and Malt Shovel are all Chuck Hahn’s handiwork, and now he's offering pilsners and prawn po’ boys from a rooftop kitchen in St Peters.
• Seven to try: Sydney’s best new sandwich shops for a winning lunch.
