What’s on around town
• Bar Morris adds a hole-in-the-wall cafe to the mix with Cafe Morris. Fabbrica Bread Shop got in on the action too, collaborating with the bar’s head chef Rosy Scatigna on three hefty sangas: a muffuletta, egg-stuffed brekkie flatbread with pesto, and a vego panini. Open from 6.30am weekdays and 7am weekends.
• Easter is for partying. Head to Jacksons on George for a mega House of Mince party over all three floors. From 3pm till 10pm, it’s glitter, Don Julio Sgroppinos and a spectacular line-up of performers.
• Alessandro Pavoni’s waterside Barangaroo spot A’Mare has added theatrics to the menu. Each dish on the Italian Job set menu has a tableside element. Think a Pugliese bruschetta to start, the signature trofie al pesto and a passionfruit Sgroppino to cleanse your palate. $180 per person with the option of a drinks pairing.
• Yulli’s launches four new ready-to-cook meals – and they’re all vegan. There are kung pao mushrooms with tofu, plus a lentil moussaka, a Moroccan cauliflower with cous cous and an eggplant panang curry. Find them in stockists across Sydney and the Northern Rivers.
• Newcastle Food Month is hitting the Steel City next month, and there are more than 75 tasty reasons to visit. There are collabs between Newy restaurants and Hunter Valley winemakers, pinot and chardy parties, $30 meal deals and a Basque feast.
• New hire: A Cafe Paci and Sixpenny alum is on the pans in a flash CBD kitchen – Shell House Dining Room & Terrace. He chats through his new role, what’s kept him in the industry for over a decade and the best thing he ate this week.
What we covered this week
• My Sydney: Alone Australia ’s Gina Chick chats kayaking, thrifting and going barefoot on the red carpet. Plus, her picks of the city – including a chawanmushi so good she’d catch the red-eye flight home for it.
• First look: The elite croissants at Moon Phase – the just-relaunched bakery in St Leonards – take five days to make. The coffee’s roasted in-house, there’s a kimchi-topped danish and the husband-and-wife team has sights set on being a neighbourhood staple.
• Now open: The Emerald Room dazzles in Darlinghurst – with acrobatics, Australiana and late-night dining.
• Now open: After 5pm, it’s adults-only at Kin Dining & Bar. The new inner-west nikkei restaurant delivers a fresh take on nikkei cuisine – think yuzu-wasabi kingfish ceviche and Jervis Bay mussels doused in a buttery salsa verde.
• Palomino Lounge, the younger-but-bigger sibling to Fortunate Son, adds New Orleans-style drinks and live-music Sundays to Enmore Road.
You might’ve missed
• First look: With Goldie’s, an ex-Bloodwood chef brings a Palm Springs edge to Dulwich Hill. There’s a Cali brekkie bowl, an outstanding vegan granola and a nugget-free kids’ menu with plenty of space for pram-parking.
• With Fior, the Jane & Arthur team is adding a 120-seat dose of fun to the Shire. It will boast a gelato trolley, an oyster-shucking bar and an aperitivo hour from the happy-hour experts.
• Now open: Izgara – the well-loved Turkish diner in Potts Point – has found a new home in the CBD. Head in for the “famous” sandwich “typically eaten after a big night out”.
