What we covered this week
• First look: Teddy, the Ezra boys’ new project, takes over the old Raja space in Potts Point. It’s pumping out retro plates and disco tunes with a brief that prioritises value over haute cuisine aesthetics.
• First look: Ennui takes to Haymarket with a riff on the carrot XO from Love, Tilly Devine. The historic two-storey space has housed a presbyterian minister, a beehive maker and a Thai grocer, and now has a team of three mates running the show.
• First look: AP Supply is the only place to buy the bakery’s plump pistachio cream puffs. The weekend-only joint is also takeaway only, and it’s all in a bid to tackle queues and do “the baker’s duty”.
• “Gut-wrenching”: in the wake of the Sydney Morning Herald’s expose on Swillhouse, top hospo names respond to the state of the industry (and share what we can do now).
• Staple, one of Sydney’s sourdough superheroes, now has another beachside bakery – with all the golden rough-puff sausage rolls you could want.
• This One Thing: fire-licked oysters at Poetica, North Sydney’s breezy dining room. And with the Metro finally running, for CBD-side residents, these pepper-topped flambadou bivalves are in easier reach than ever before.
• Coffee by day, boiler room by night: FBR is a 15-seat space with specialty pours and secret sets.
You might’ve missed
• Three of the best dishes in Burwood that’ll get you change from a $20 note. A silky serve of noodles, crispy-bottom pork buns and a cheese toastie from a specialty coffee stop.
• First look: strawberry cold brew in Mascot, a Japanese bakery’s Wolli Creek sibling, and fantastic Reubens to the west.
• First look: Bistro Grenier arrives to a loft space in a Newtown wine bar. It’s from the Odd Culture team and brings a menu capturing the “terroir and weirdness” of the neighbourhood.
• The Big Squish: food writer Gemma Plunkett is back with her monthly column. For August, she's taking inspiration from some favoured spots around Sydney (Small’s Deli! Baba’s Place! 10 William St!) and showing us how to have a BIG party in your teeny home.
