First Look: September Studio Opens a “Neighbourhood Stock-Up Shop” in Darlinghurst

Darlinghurst’s September Studio has never really just been a florist. What started as a little space selling flowers during the day and hosting ceramics classes at night is now a spot known by millions around the world – for big, bright architectural bunches (and florist Bryce Heyworth’s dance moves). Now, the floral studio has moved into a bigger space a few doors up – and the original has become the spot for coffee, pastries and more.
“We always started with the intention of creating a cool community creative space,” Heyworth tells Broadsheet. “That’s kind of morphed into what it is today, which is amazing and something that definitely doesn’t get lost on me … But now that we are here, it’s like: okay, how do we transform that experience from what people see online to a bricks-and-mortar place? Where there’s actually a reason to come to the florist – and we’re not just appealing to people who would generally come just to pick up a bunch of flowers.”
That’s become a “neighbourhood stock-up shop”, and there are Primary coffee beans on the machine. “It’s where I’ve gone for the last five years to get my coffee. People keep saying to me, ‘That’s why you’re opening the coffee shop, isn’t it?’ And it is,” Heyworth says, laughing.
Iggy’s is on croissant duty – a full-circle moment, with September Studio’s first ceramics destined for the Bronte bakery – and matcha can be spiked with syrups made with flowers and fruits foraged by Gabriel Gutnik of Ziggy’s Wild Foods (like lilly pilly, wild rose and rosella).
Heyworth appreciates the little things that make a cafe really good – so September’s second space is going to be more than just a florist with a coffee machine. You won’t be rushed out, and you’re encouraged to sit and work or read. There’s also a hydrangea garden full of cute flower-shaped tables and chairs, made for the space by a friend, adjoining the sleeker glass-walled cafe space.
“We’re working with the right people to ensure that it is the best coffee in the area – it’s the same approach we take when we’re doing flowers. There will definitely be times, hopefully, if it’s busy, that I am on the machine.”
The flower studio a few doors down is where you’ll need to go for the signature September Studio arrangements, with market-style bunches available at the cafe. Plus, there are a range of Australian orchids and lifestyle pieces to shop too.
