Japanese restaurant PaperPlanes is welcoming the drop in temperature by reinstating its Ramen Nights ramen menu. The Tokyo-bright, anime-inspired space is accented with neon hues and thousands of hanging aluminium cranes – making it a vibrant, energised alternative to a more sombre fireside retreat on a cold night. The specialty build-your-own ramen menu has been designed by head chef Jin Kung and features three broth styles, traditional ramen noodles and a set of toppings and extras.

Kung’s broths are sweet and filled with flavour – choose from traditional tonkotsu pork bone, with or without spice, or a vegan vegetable and konbu soup. Topping choices include crispy karaage chicken, light and crunchy tempura prawn, slow-cooked chashu roast pork, or tofu and seasonal vegetables. The soups are then layered with a soft-boiled egg, sweet corn kernels, bamboo shoots, shallots and nori seaweed. The result is satisfying and heartwarming without being overwhelming – ramen at its simple best.

Why not warm up to your bowl of ramen with PaperPlanes’ starter staples such as edamame with chilli salt or a PaperPlanes pork belly bun with jalapeno mayonnaise – honest competition for the celebrated Ippudo pork bun. There are also nine different sakes on offer, as well as a host of Shibuya-inspired cocktails to liven even the gloomiest mid-winter evenings. The Ramen Nights program also features a $5 menu on the first Monday of every month, with live music and drinks specials.
