You’re out with friends, strolling down George Street, looking for a warm place in which to have a few drinks and enjoy a hearty meal. Upon entering The Rocks you notice something new beneath the Russell Hotel. What you’ve just found is The Push, an intimate bar with a focus on craft beers, cocktails, delicious food and premium wines.
The space originally housed The Russell Wine Bar before being made over and reopened as The Push. The name comes from The Rocks Push, a group of well-dressed larrikins that terrorised the area in the 1800s. The interior design of The Push is by Victoria Hampshire Designs and brings a mix of modern and historic elements. It combines custom-designed and antique pieces – bronzed lamps hang over tables with leather-sofa-style seating, giving the space an intimate and warm feel.
To complement the inviting space, Nic Whalley and head chef Dean Barlow have created a menu that mixes modern Australian, English and American influences, catering for every appetite.
There are hearty bar snacks such as an English-style pork pie with mustard and pickled onions and a gourmet pork and fennel sausage roll. If you’re with friends, try one of the share plates, such as the Sichuan- and kaffir-lime crumbed calamari strips with soy dipping sauce. Or the reuben plate of house-poached corned beef, cabbage slaw, Swiss cheese, gherkins, rye and mustard.
On the drinks menu you’ll find craft beers from Little Creatures and White Rabbit, along with premium wines and cocktails such as The Larrikin; Jack Daniels, Tuaca, muddled lime and clapped mint topped with ginger ale.
