Though it rolled out its relaunch in August this year, the Woolwich Pier Hotel is no stranger to Sydney’s pub scene. With SJB Interiors and design specialist Luchetti Krelle behind the renovations, the once tired, dual-levelled space now resembles a colonial clubhouse crossed with a contemporary British gastro pub.
The downstairs dining hall is decorated with caramel timber tones and ferns among white tiles, while upstairs The Viceroy sees an old-world, British West Indies charm, showcasing pre-loved vintage treasures, royal blue walls and a green-tiled cocktail bar. The decked courtyard terrace with duck egg blue awnings and white timber holds cosy bungalows, equipped with communal tables and deckchairs.
With head chef Glen Tabudlo in the kitchen, the British-inspired menu offers a range of generously portioned plates. Bar snacks abound, including brandade croquettes (salted cod fritters with garlic mayo) and a range of brioche sliders filled with pulled pork belly, beer battered dory fillet and assorted slaws and dressings. For something more substantial, try a barramundi pot pie or a juicy grass-fed beef burger - a balancing act of relish, pickles, onion jam, cheddar and mustard mayo on a brioche bun, served with shoestring fries.
In keeping with the British theme, Sundays see a full English roast on the menu, changing regularly with cuts such as Riverine saddle of lamb served with sides of roast vegetables, pumpkin mash, condiments and Yorkshire pudding. There’s sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream to finish; or for an afternoon treat, sample the daily fresh scones with jams and clotted cream.
Ciders and craft beers like One Fifty Lashes are plentiful, while wine labels Mike Press and Cape Mentelle are available by the glass and bottle. With the upstairs balcony showcasing an idyllic backdrop of Sydney Harbour and the city skyline, expect long lunches stretching into summer afternoons with jugs of sangria to keep things merry.
