Paramart is the snazziest grab ’n’ go option in Sydney. The range. The location. The vibes. The neon-lit vending machine has just launched in the Paramount House Hotel lobby, serving as a mini-mart-slash-minibar for hotel guests – and a fun option if you’re in the area.
The bright nook in the lobby, just around the corner from reception, was designed by Awa Studio, Anna Wu’s Sydney-based architecture firm, which is also behind Chinatown Country Club. For the Paramount’s kiosk, Wu created a space melding the aesthetics of retro Aussie milk bars and Tokyo’s convenience culture.
“We were inspired by how vending machines are used in Japan to dispense anything from figurines to saké,” Wu says. “A customised vending machine experience was the perfect solution to offer amenities to guests in a space-saving and convenient way.”
Paramart’s shelves are filled with some of Sydney’s finest food and drink. Parami’s onigiri, made just around the corner, sit next to choc-chip cookies from AP Bread. Penny’s Cheese Shop has fromage covered, ready for AP’s crostini; while the Baba’s Place team has jarred up its silky taramosalata.
Enmore Road Martini stop Bar Planet has bottled bespoke, single-serve Paramartinis, and Westmont Pickles’ Virgin Bloody Mary cans are best paired with vodka. There’s tiramisu from Cicerone, Messina chocolates and jars of chocolate yoghurt from Baba’s.
Artist Sonny Day led the creative direction, with bold blues and reds popping against a muted-pink vending machine, and a funky use of tiles, textures, mirrors and glyphs throughout. “We wanted the space to be an extension of the art I’ve created around the hotel. The imagery for Paramart guides and grabs guests’ attention.”
Sydney designer Domus Vim created the trippy lightbox that signals you’re in the right place. Alongside the expertly curated selection of Sydney snacks, you’ll also find out-there things for guests to use while they stay, like vintage Nintendo Game Boys, tarot cards, Pilates kits and a library curated by Btwnlns.
Paramart is open within Paramount House Hotel, 80 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
