Given the quality across all the venues involved, it’s impossible to choose badly at World Class Cocktail Week. But it’s also impossible to try everything. With that in mind, we’ve selected 10 cocktails we think are definitely worth seeking out.
Sophia at Maybe Frank
The team at Maybe Frank will be making freshly sliced mortadella paninos daily, alongside five special cocktails. We recommend the Sophia, made with Don Julio Reposado tequila, Cocchi Rosa (a slightly bitter, spiced Italian aperitif wine), geranium syrup and bitters.
Make-Your-Own Bloody Mary at Bloody Mary’s Sydney and the Village Inn
Bloody Mary’s Sydney and the Village Inn are giving you the chance to create your own Bloody Mary on the final day of World Class Cocktail Week. Start with a base of Ketel One vodka and tomato juice, then add to taste: Worcestershire sauce, tabasco, spices, seasonings – even passionfruit or bacon. It’s up to you.
The Royal County at Darlo Country Club
We know Tanqueray gin and Pimms make excellent bases for country club-themed cocktails, but for World Class Cocktail Week, Darlo County Club are toying with tradition. The Royal County is made with Ron Zacapa 23-year-old rum, mandarin, pineapple, lemon, pomegranate and hibiscus iced tea. Try the Royal County at Darlo Country Club’s Game, Set, Match event.
Obligatory at Dead Ringer
If you haven’t been down to Dead Ringer for its Obligatory cocktail (made with Don Julio Anejo tequila, cold drip coffee and smoked maple), don’t wait: during World Class Cocktail Week it’s being paired with their toffee ice cream dessert (topped with bee pollen and crunchy malt biscuit crumbs) for just $25.
Chrysanthemum Vodka Ice Tea at Bloodwood
All of the cocktails at Bloodwood’s edible flower-themed food and cocktail match sound fascinating, but there’s something especially intriguing about the Chrysanthemum Vodka Ice Tea. Dried chrysanthemum petals are rehydrated and mixed with rock sugar, Ketel One vodka and lemon, and the cocktail is finished with chrysanthemum leaf.
Madame Chuhai at Cho Cho San
Cho Cho San’s version of a Yuzu Sour is made with Pampero Blanco rum, elderflower liqueur, yuzu juice and orange bitters. Matched with a plate of Hiramasa kingfish sashimi topped with cucumber and pickled ginger, the pairing is one of the cocktail and food match offers at Cho Cho San.
Hemingway Daiquiri at Henrietta Supper Club
Ernest Hemingway fell for the Daiquiri during the many afternoons he spent at El Floridita, a bar in Havana, Cuba. He loved all of barman Constantino Ribalaigua Vert’s variations on the classic, but none more so than the one that would eventually bear his name. Unlike the classic, the Hemingway Daiquiri is made without sugar, so it’s tart, bitter and anything but cloying.
El Bandito at This Must Be The Place
Luke Ashton (World Class Australia Bartender of the Year 2013) and Charlie Ainsbury (World Class Australia Bartender of the Year 2014 and 2016) are recreating four of their World Class competition-winning cocktails for the duration of World Class week. There’s no wrong choice here and none of these drinks have been available to the public before, but Ashton’s El Bandito, inspired by the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, sounds special. It’s made with Don Julio Reposado tequila, a spiced Pedro Ximenez reduction, burnt coffee, lucerne (a type of hay) smoke and Tex-Mex bitters, and is served over a large block of ice.
Tanqueray Maid at Bulletin Place
For each day of Cocktail Week, Bulletin Place is creating a different cocktail designed to bring out the fruit flavours of Tanqueray No. TEN gin. First up is the Tanqueray Maid, combining Tanqueray No. TEN, lime, mint and cucumber.
Talisker Cocktails at The Gretz
There are lots of different Talisker whisky-based cocktails on offer at the Gretz during World Class Cocktail Week, but a standout is the union of Talisker, orange sherbet, sparkling wine and a finish of cracked black pepper. The cocktail is paired with two oysters.
