Opening Date for New Sydney Fish Market Confirmed

As you cross Anzac Bridge you cannot miss the new Sydney Fish Market’s angular 200-metre-wide roof, arching across Blackwattle Bay. The government is forecasting six million visitors each year to this new star on Sydney’s scene, for locals and tourists alike. After construction delays, law suits and more, we have an opening date: Monday January 19, 2026.
“Taxpayers are going to get a pleasant shock at the scale of it,” premier Chris Minns said at a press conference on Thursday. “It’s fantastic for Sydney, exactly what we need.”
The $700 million fish market is still very much a construction site inside, with fit-outs expected to be completed in November. “We’ve waited decades for this new market, and taking this time means we can open with a bang,” CEO Daniel Jarosch said in a statement today. “A January opening gives tenants the time to finish fit-outs this year, and then train staff and prepare operationally.”
The new market will be more connected to the city, with two nearby light rail stops and a pedestrian path joining the future builds of a public ferry wharf (reported to be hitting the old fish market site, along with an apartment development) and a metro station for Pyrmont.
The 2026 launch date means we’ll be buying our Christmas prawns at the original fish markets, just next door. Our oft-romanticised market is the third largest in the world and has been located at Blackwattle Bay since 1966. In 2016, the NSW government announced the markets would move around the corner to a site on Bridge Road. In 2020 the massive build was approved. This year’s 36-hour seafood marathon then, from 5am on December 23, will be the old girl’s last – and sure to bring a record turnout.
At the new build, 40 retailers will span the three storeys, operating with double the opening hours we’re used to – so Fish Market sundowners are in your future.
