The New $836 Million Sydney Fish Market Opens Today. Here’s What To Know Before You Visit
In the staggering new build, 20 tonnes of seafood is expected to be sold every hour. And that kicks off today. As you cross Anzac Bridge you cannot miss the new Sydney Fish Market’s angular 200-metre-wide roof, arching across Blackwattle Bay. It’s the home of 40 retailers – a mix of necomers and those moving from the rough-around-the-edges original – a live auction floor, wharf for fish deliveries and more. The government is forecasting six million visitors each year to this new star on Sydney’s scene.
At the $836 million new build, 40 retailers will span the three storeys, operating with more than twice the area (and double the opening hours we’re used to). That means Fish Market sundowners are in your future.
Here’s everything you need to know about the market before you visit:
Opening hours at the new Sydney Fish Market
The fish market will be open from 7am till 10pm from Sunday to Thursday, and from 7am till midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Retailers will operate within specific opening hours.
How to get to the new Sydney Fish Market
The new Sydney Fish Market is located at 1 Bridge Road, Glebe, adjacent to the original. The best way to get there is via public transport.
Light rail
There are three light rail stations within 700 metres of the fish market – Bank Street, Wentworth Park and Glebe – with regular services seven days a week.
Bus
The market is 550 metres from the Harris Street bus stop, where the 389 and 501 both stop. Then, 750 metres away is Glebe Point Road, where the 370, 431, 433 and 469 stop.
Taxi and ride share
There is a dedicated pick-up and drop-off zone out the front of the fish market.
Train and metro
The closes stations are Central, Town Hall and Gadigal, which are within two kilometres of the market.
Top chefs teach classes at the new Sydney Seafood School
Sydney Seafood School is moving just around the bay, too. And it’s reopening with space for 130 people, a dedicated oyster bay, flash new kitchens (with Neff and Gaggenau appliances), a wine program championing local drops and a starry lineup of chefs teaching classes.
Danielle Alvarez will showcase dishes from her book Recipes for a Lifetime of Beautiful Cooking on March 21, and Junda Khoo will cook from his Ho Jiak: A Taste of Malaysia. Plus, there are classes from Khanh Nguyen, Joel Bickford, Brendan Pang, Giovanni Pilu, Alessandro Pavoni and more.
For Lunar New Year 2026, Junda Khoo, Nat Thaipun, Luke Bourke and Somer Sivrioglu will be teaching special masterclasses.
