Nine To Try: New Sydney Cafes for Matcha, Sangas, Pastries and More

This city is incredible. It’s been just 31 days since we published our annual half-year wrap, Sydney’s Best New Cafes and Bakeries of 2026 (So Far). Since then, we’ve uncovered nine more new cafes, from a 20-year-old coffee roaster’s cave-like flagship to a brunch spot inside a nursery. Here’s where to find them – and what to order.

Clay Eatery, Turramurra

St Ives cafe Stanley Street has been keeping the locals happy since 2013. Who better, then, to be running Clay Eatery inside the leafy confines of Honeysuckle Garden nursery in neighbouring Turramurra? Head in for iced tahini lattes and other espresso drinks made with Single O coffee, plus breakfast and lunch menus filled with Middle Eastern flavours. There’s knafeh French toast with rosewater syrup; spicy eggs with labneh, chilli oil and crispy chickpeas on sourdough; and a pulled lamb wrap with garlic, pickles, mint and tzatziki. 45–47 Tennyson Avenue, Turramurra

She Needs Coffee, Surry Hills

She needs coffee – and a bit of retail therapy. That’s the offer at this new mother-and-daughter cafe inside Surry Hills Edit (She), where you can shop designer and vintage clothing sourced from Japan and Italy while sipping an iced matcha, blueberry latte or cold brew. Moschino, Trussardi, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Prada are just a few of the labels represented. 275 Crown Street, Sydney

Bantry Bay Grocer, Seaforth

It’s always a good time to visit Bantry Bay, a new spot inspired by Europe’s all-day alimentaris. Founder Grace Triglone has spent her career hosting at some of Sydney’s best-loved spots – Effie’s, Caravin and Randy’s – but this is her first time running a kitchen. Sangas are built on rustic breads like ciabatta and focaccia and include Mum’s Special (bresaola, pear, parmesan, walnuts, rocket), the BBG (porchetta, buffalo mozzarella, salsa verde) and Sex On Bread (salami, pecorino, whipped honey ricotta, Calabrian chilli and roasted peppers). At night, pop by for tap beer, cocktails, wine, and meats and cheeses sliced to order, like prosciutto di Parma and 18-month comté. 1/549 Sydney Rd, Seaforth.

Sandwhich, St Peters

Brother- and sister-in-law Charles Winardi and Nicole Alexandra are accomplished chefs who’ve worked together at Neptune’s Grotto, and whose individual CVs span Ito, Rekodo, Dawn Baked Goods, Ovo, Dopa and Hubert. They’ve poured all that experience into the colourful Sandwhich, where their Indonesian backgrounds collide with time spent in Japanese and Italian kitchens, plus Alexandra’s baking experience. There are several breakfast and lunch sangas, but the headliner is the chicken nanban option, featuring fried chicken with a sweet and sour glaze, plus egg tartare. Don’t sleep on the black sesame banana bread, either. It’s one of several house-baked goods on the front counter, including matcha-and-berry muffins. Shop 9/60 Applebee St, St Peters

Mecca Coffee, Darlinghurst

At its newest location, influential roaster Mecca has gone against 30 years of prevailing design wisdom, which says cafes need light-coloured materials, big windows and lots of sun. The Foley Street address, with a rough-hewn red marble bar quarried from a single block of dolomitic stone from the Pilbara, feels more like a cave. We’re incredibly into it. The 20-seat space is lit by a moon-like orb recessed into the ceiling, which changes colour throughout the day. Come for signature blends, excellent single origins and a spiced cold brew. Humble Bakery, Rose Bay

Is a bakery still humble when it’s up to four (and counting) locations? This fresh outlet packs the same finger buns, cookies, cakes, pies and sausage rolls that have made the Surry Hills original and its Kent Street and Circular Quay offshoots such a raging success. But this waterfront kiosk, right on Rose Bay Marina, is the first Humble to offer smoothies and to dispense a rotating range of soft serve flavours. 594 New South Head Road, Rose Bay

Ouji, Haymarket

At this market stall turned permanent cafe, matcha is whisked to order seven days a week until 7pm. Ouji uses first harvest powder to ensure the matcha flavour shines through, despite the bold add-ons. These include coconut cloud (using whipped cream), Biscoff cold foam, jasmine syrup, mango jam and strawberry jam. But the pistachio cloud matcha is the most popular item across both the market stall (still a fixture at Kirribilli Markets) and the new Haymarket outpost. It’s creamy, with a subtle pistachio flavour that doesn’t overpower. 4 Bijou Lane, Haymarket

Serva, Freshwater

House-made pickles and ferments made this Seaforth sandwich shop a northern beaches destination. It’s locally famed for its bestselling egg and cheese English muffin with goat’s gouda, shallot chimichurri and a fermented jalapeno relish available to take home in a jar. Now the team has spun that success into a second shop in Freshie, which opens tomorrow on the main drag. 16A Lawrence St, Freshwater

Sangcuary, Stanmore

“Salted, sweetened, sandwiched” is the brief at Sangcuary, the second bakery from the innovative team at Pantry Story (you have until Sunday to try its teapot-shaped pastry, exclusive to Broadsheet’s Dine Out festival). It’s all about house-made breads and focaccia, which form the basis for sangas – both savoury and filled with gelato. From the former category, grab a roast beef number with rich oxtail consommé for dipping. From the latter, a malted croissant gelato between sablé biscuits.
