Ever wanted, no, needed, a bottle of Veuve with your delivery of pepperoni pizza? How about a biodynamic Hunter Valley merlot paired with a vegan-cheese pizza? A sixpack of Young Henrys tinnies to chase down spice-rubbed chilli wings?
A food-and-liquor-delivery licence is rare in NSW but The New Britannia, a bar in Chippendale’s heritage-listed Britannia building, has lucked out. Angry Tony’s, The New Britannia’s in-house, New York-style pizzeria, can deliver booze before 10pm to anywhere between Newtown, Glebe and Darlinghurst.
The drinks range from standard sixpacks of cider and beer, to 700-millilitre bottles of spirits and a small-but-sharp list of predominantly biodynamic and natural Australian wines. You can even order a pack of smokes. “It was too good of an opportunity to pass up,” says co-owner Scott Davis. “The bones were all here – before us, it was a pizzeria, and the delivery licence carried over.”
Pizzas have cheesy names, such as the Foul Play, a chicken-pesto pizza with zucchini, red onion and rocket. And Pleased to Meat You, a beef, bacon and spicy-sausage barbeque pizza topped with mozzarella. Salads, chilli wings and pastas round out the menu. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free pizza bases and pastas are available as well – Scott’s partner Adriana is celiac, so the menu has her in mind.
The New Britannia is a far cry from Davis’s 20-plus-years in hospitality management, which spans nightclubs in England and Ibiza. But he’s happy to swap strobe lights and trance music for a quieter space.
“We’re not trying to be the coolest venue in Chippendale,” says Davis. “We’re really not trying to overcomplicate it: we’re just a nice, relaxed neighbourhood bar with great pizza.”
If you dine in you’ll find The New Britannia has already shed any new-bar stiffness. It has kept things simple – there’s a hardwood timber bar at the back of the single, warmly lit olive-green room adorned with exposed lights, wall plants and vines. The casual vibe is winning over locals: the place has been filling up each night since opening last week. The only sign The New Britannia is new is the still-empty wall of fame: as yet, nobody has completed the 22-inch pizza eating challenge.
