Hills Heist seems like an appropriate name for an event that involves a posse of winemakers from the Adelaide Hills visiting Sydney’s (Surry) Hills for a night of drinking, music, European-inspired snacks and conversation.

For three hours, at Surry Hills’ Winebar One, punters can experience the diverse terroir of the 70-kilometre stretch of the Adelaide Hills, situated 45 minutes from Adelaide. There will be an impressive 70 wines to sample, from the likes of Henschke, Hahndorf Hill, Penfolds, Shaw + Smith, Bird in Hand, Murdoch Hill and Petaluma, among others.

“It’s where old school and new school sit comfortably side by side,” says host and wine writer Nick Ryan. “It’s where conventional wisdom is enhanced by elevated thinking.”

While you sip on gruner veltliner, shiraz, sparkling and pinot noir, DJ Levins will play some tunes as winemakers circle the room pouring and chatting. Included in that group is Murdoch Hill’s Michael Downer, who won the 2017 Young Gun of Wine Award.

Hills Heist is on Tuesday May 8 at Winebar One, 119 Kippax Street, Surry Hills, 6pm to 9pm. Tickets are $65 and available here.
